A researcher at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is among principal investigators at 10 California institutions receiving Early Translational IV Research grants, totaling $40 million, approved today by the governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) at its meeting in San Diego.

New research by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego climate scientists attributes the attenuation of a worldwide temperature increase to a cooling of eastern Pacific Ocean waters, one that counteracts the warming effect of greenhouse gases.

Two researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have been awarded grants totaling more than $889,000 from the Cystinosis Research Foundation (CRF) to investigate better treatments and a cure for cystinosis. A rare and deadly genetic disease, cystinosis affects about 500 children and young adults in the United States and 2,000 worldwide. The most recent grants bring the total funding from CRF to UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers to more than $5.5 million since 2003.

The computer science program at the University of California, San Diego is on a roll. It jumped several notches in a widely-reported international ranking of top universities by discipline, and the increase occurred prior to changes now under way in the wake of the largest gift ever in the history of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department.

The University of California, San Diego has been ranked as the top university in the nation for the fourth consecutive year by Washington Monthly. The magazine’s annual “College Rankings” considers how universities are “acting on behalf of the true public interest,” measuring institutions based on three criteria: social mobility, research and civic engagement.

The Preuss School UCSD was named one of the top five charter high schools in California in a report developed to strengthen accountability among the state’s charter schools. The seventh-annual USC School Performance Dashboard includes for the first time Top 10 lists for charter schools at both the elementary/middle school and high school levels.

An annual tradition to honor the commitment and contributions of UC San Diego staff members, this year’s All Staff Picnic was a hit with more than 3,000 people in attendance. Held Aug. 16 in Town Square, staff members were treated to a tasty lunch by Bar None BBQ and entertained by the Full Strength Funk Band.

Vedolizumab, a new intravenous antibody medication, has shown positive results for treating both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to researchers at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine. The findings, published in two papers, will appear in the August 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 14th best university in the world, up from 15th place last year, and its life sciences and engineering programs are ranked 7th and 13th respectively, according to the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
