June 27, 2014 — Shannon Baird, a science teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, has been chosen as one of 14 educators from across the nation to receive a Frontiers in Science Research Teaching Fellowship from the American Physiology Society. The year-long program includes an opportunity to collaborate with local scientists in a laboratory over the summer as well as participate in an online professional development program that provides insight into how to engage students through hands-on science projects.

June 27, 2014 — David S. Rose, a veteran law enforcement officer at the University of California, San Diego, has been appointed chief of police at UC San Diego effective June 30, 2014. Rose will assume the role following the retirement this week of Orville King, who has served as chief of police for the past 12 years. The appointment follows an extensive search.

June 25, 2014 — Glaucoma specialist Felipe Medeiros, MD, PhD, professor of clinical ophthalmology and medical director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center at the University of California, San Diego Shiley Eye Center, has been named the inaugural holder of the Ben and Wanda Hildyard Chair for Diseases of the Eye. The chair is one of three established by a bequest from Ben and Wanda Hildyard to help UC San Diego School of Medicine recruit and retain top faculty members. The bequest provided endowment funds of more than $6 million to establish the three chairs.

June 25, 2014 — The University of California, San Diego has announced a new master’s degree program in Data Science and Engineering, intended for working professionals with a broad educational background and/or training in computer science, engineering, or mathematics.

June 24, 2014 — For Daniel Million, learning recently that he was one of two seniors at The Preuss School UCSD to receive the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship was more than a “huge relief,” it also had special significance. Just three years earlier, his sister Miriam received the same scholarship during her senior year at Preuss. Being awarded the scholarships meant their family would not have to worry about how to pay for college as Gates Millennium Scholars have all college costs covered through graduation.

June 24, 2014 — Adam Anderson is an alumnus of the Electrical and Computer Engineering program in the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where he completed his Ph.D. in 2008. Today he teaches electrical engineering at Tennessee Tech University, and together with a student, Anderson recently pulled off a major coup: winning the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Spectrum Challenge. To do so, he developed a radio system that made the best use of broadcast spectrum by automatically seeking wavelengths that aren’t cluttered with radio traffic. These so-called software-defined radios (SDRs) can also adjust output power and transmission parameters and keep track of spectrum use by nearby devices to optimize their performance.

June 23, 2014 — UC San Diego Health System’s doctors are the first fertility specialists in the county to use a new ultrasound technique to assess fallopian tubes by employing a mixture of saline and air bubbles that is less painful, avoids x-ray exposure and is more convenient to patients during an already vulnerable time.

June 22, 2014 — Biologists at UC San Diego have found the “missing link” in the chemical system that enables animal cells to produce ribosomes—the thousands of protein “factories” contained within each cell that manufacture all of the proteins needed to build tissue and sustain life.

June 22, 2014 — Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered a fundamental mechanism by which the brain maintains its internal balance. The mechanism, described in the June 22 advanced online publication of the journal Nature, involves the brain's most basic inner wiring and the processes that control whether a neuron relays information to other neurons or suppresses the transmission of information.

June 20, 2014 — The California budget signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on June 20 creates a statewide research grants program called Cal-BRAIN, an initiative led by UC San Diego. With an initial allocation of $2 million, Cal-BRAIN – short for California Blueprint for Research to Advance Innovations in Neuroscience – is a state complement to the federal BRAIN Initiative announced by President Barack Obama in April of 2013. It aims to “accelerate the development of brain mapping techniques, including the development of new technologies.”
