Mark Thiemens, a former dean and professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego, has won the most prestigious prize awarded in the field of meteoritics —the scientific discipline concerned with the study of solar system origin, evolution and history.

To prevent, detect and combat hardware Trojans at any level of the supply chain, UC San Diego computer scientists and their collaborators have devised a new technique that tracks information flow through a circuit’s logic gates.The technique is described in the cover story in the August 2016 edition of IEEE Computer.

The University of California San Diego’s Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) is adding two programs to its already culturally rich offerings—Chicana/o and Latina/o Arts and Humanities (CLAH) and Third World Studies (TWS). Both are established campus programs now administered through the institute. CLAH provides a broad introduction to the histories and cultures produced by Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, while TWS analyzes and explains issues facing the “Third World” from a multi-disciplinary approach.

Armed with a $2 million grant from NIH, UC San Diego engineers and SDSU audiologists will build and deploy two new platforms on which researchers can develop better hearing aids. The project is led by Qualcomm Institute research scientist Hari Garudadri.

Surfers, scientists and survivors will come together to support the fight against cancer at the annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational, set for Sunday, Aug. 21 at the beach near Scripps Pier in La Jolla. The University of California San Diego fundraiser features a surf competition and festive luau. All proceeds benefit Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.

In a study spanning molecular genetics, stem cells and the sciences of both brain and behavior, researchers at University of California San Diego, with colleagues at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and elsewhere, have created a neurodevelopmental model of a rare genetic disorder that may provide new insights into the underlying neurobiology of the human social brain.

A team of 127 co-authors led by UC San Diego faculty from computer science and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy report in Nature Biotechnology on the successful rollout of Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) that lets scientists share mass spectrometry data worldwide to speed the search for potentially valuable molecules in natural products.

A multi-institutional team of researchers led by the University of California San Diego has received a grant from the NSF Office of Emerging Frontiers and Multidisciplinary Activities (EFMA) to develop and manufacture microchips that would enable secure and efficient quantum communication. The technology has applications in long-distance fiber optic communication and will help advance research in quantum sensing and computing.
