NSF Awards $1.2 Million to UCSD/UCLA to Pinpoint Unused Space in Wireless Spectrum

October 25, 2013

A research collaboration between the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles has been awarded $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation to enable smartphones, sensors and other software-defined radio devices to rapidly and precisely pinpoint bands of unused radio spectrum and eliminate any existing signal interference.

As California Cliffs Erode, UC San Diego Team Works to Track and Understand these Changes

May 26, 2022

…top, and wave pressure sensors measure wave impacts hitting the base of the cliff. These pressure sensors allow scientists to measure how often the waves reach the base of the cliff and potentially contribute to the movement of the slide. Scripps researcher Adam Young points to an area north of…

Humanizing the Research Enterprise

March 19, 2015

…the Center for Wearable Sensors, which has made great strides in creating non-invasive methods of measuring body chemistry. Diabetics, for instance, may someday give themselves the last finger-prick to check glucose levels; Wang’s team recently developed a temporary tattoo sensor that can determine those levels right from the skin. The…

A Glove Powered by Soft Robotics to Interact with Virtual Reality Environments

May 31, 2017

Engineers at UC San Diego are using soft robotics technology to make light, flexible gloves that allow users to feel tactile feedback when they interact with virtual reality environments. The researchers used the gloves to realistically simulate the tactile feeling of playing a virtual piano keyboard.

Computer Science Students Garner 2023 Google PhD Fellowships

October 23, 2023

Two PhD students in the University of California San Diego’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Ke Sun and Jennifer Switzer, have been awarded 2023 Google PhD Fellowships. They join three recent CSE recipients of the award.

Scripps-developed Landers Provide New View of Ocean Floor

April 17, 2012

…with potential biomedical value. Sensors onboard the DOVs are equipped to collect pressure, temperature, salinity, and other physical and chemical measurements. They can operate as seafloor factories, filtering water for microbes, or incubating bacterial cultures. DOVs also act as valuable testing platforms to qualify new technologies and investigate new scientific…

Novel Device Measures Nerve Activity That May Help Treat Sepsis and PTSD

November 17, 2022

Engineers and physicians at UC San Diego have developed a device to non-invasively measure cervical nerve activity in humans, a new tool they say could potentially inform and improve treatments for patients with sepsis or post-traumatic stress disorder.

This Robot Doesn’t Need Any Electronics

February 17, 2021

Engineers at the University of California San Diego have created a four-legged soft robot that doesn’t need any electronics to work. The robot only needs a constant source of pressurized air for all its functions, including its controls and locomotion systems.

Real-life Toy Story

January 30, 2014

…components such as the sensors and motors required to reach a target retail price of $99. The team deliberated for weeks about the right combination of inexpensive motors and gearboxes to get the job done. Ph.D. student Nick Morozovsky developed a tool combining hardware and software to evaluate various motors…

Breakthrough Enables Battery-free Smart Tag Technology

February 21, 2023

Imagine you can open your fridge, open an app on your phone and immediately know which items are expiring within a few days. This is one of the applications that a new technology developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego would enable.
