New Global Rankings by U.S. News Name UC San Diego 18th Best University in World

The University of California, San Diego is one of only five top public universities in the U.S. to make the top 20 list in a new ranking of the world’s top 500 colleges. The campus took the No. 18 spot in U.S. News and World Report’s first-ever global ranking of universities which measured factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.

Denise Ducheny Appointed to Obama Administration Post

Denise Moreno Ducheny, senior policy advisor at the University of California, San Diego School of International Relations and Pacific Studies’ Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, will be appointed to a key Obama Administration post, the White House announced Oct. 8.

Event at UC San Diego to Examine Diaspora Communities along U.S.-Mexican Border

Over the last 45 years, the number of people living outside their country of origin, known as diaspora, has almost tripled – from 76 million to more than 232 million. Many within diaspora communities around the world maintain active connections within their country of origin. The role of the Mexican diaspora in San Diego will be the center of a conference to be held from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 13 on the University of California, San Diego campus.

UC San Diego-led Team Discovers Scarab from Time of Biblical Pharaoh

Archaeologists led by University of California, San Diego Anthropology Professor Thomas E. Levy have discovered a small Egyptian scarab bearing the name of Sheshonq I – the only historical figure mentioned in both the Hebrew Bible (as Shishak) and Egyptian monuments indirectly related to the Biblical King Solomon.
