UC San Diego Health System Retains No. 1 Ranking

UC San Diego Health System remains among the nation’s best, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-15 issue of “America’s Best Hospitals,” released this week. The magazine’s widely cited findings again placed UC San Diego Health System first in the San Diego metropolitan area and fifth in California, with national rankings in 11 specialties, up from 10 last year. This is comparable to the country’s most prestigious health care institutions.

Charles E. Daniels to be Honored for His Leadership in Health-System Pharmacy

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has named Charles E. Daniels, PhD, FASHP, as the recipient of the 2014 John W. Webb Lecture Award. The Webb Award honors health-system pharmacy practitioners or educators who stand apart because of their extraordinary dedication to fostering excellence in pharmacy management and leadership.

Hellman Fellowship Program Announces 2014-2015 Award Recipients

Fifteen faculty members at the University of California, San Diego have been selected for the Hellman Fellowship Program for 2014-2015. The program provides financial awards to junior faculty members to support their research and scholarly work as they advance toward tenure. A total of $487,500 was awarded to the 2014-2015 class of fellows.

McKerrow Appointed Dean of Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Effective July 1, 2014, James H. McKerrow, MD, PhD, will become the second dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. McKerrow will join UC San Diego from UC San Francisco, where he served as professor of pathology and director of the Center for Discovery and Innovation in Parasitic Diseases.

UC San Diego Biology Professor Named Prestigious HHMI Professor

A biology professor at UC San Diego who heads a research institute that brings together scientists across the campus studying circadian rhythms, the internal “biological clock” that governs the daily activities in humans and other organisms, has been named by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute an HHMI professor.

Preuss School Teacher Shannon Baird Awarded Frontiers in Physiology Fellowship

Shannon Baird, a science teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, has been chosen as one of 14 educators from across the nation to receive a Frontiers in Science Research Teaching Fellowship from the American Physiology Society. The year-long program includes an opportunity to collaborate with local scientists in a laboratory over the summer as well as participate in an online professional development program that provides insight into how to engage students through hands-on science projects.
