Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has named Scripps alumna Deborah Zmarzly, Ph.D., as interim director. Zmarzly has been with Birch Aquarium since 1993, devoting more than 20 years to making science accessible and interpreting Scripps research for the public.
Richard Kronick, PhD, a health policy expert and faculty member at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has been elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences and widely regarded as one of the nation’s most respected scientific society.
Dustin Richmond, a third year graduate student in computer science and engineering, builds complex computer hardware systems with the power to process large data sets—such as the data involved with DNA sequencing. In his first year, Richmond worked with technology company Cognex to design an ultra-high-speed image processing pipeline—specifically for active 3D scanners—that could decompress and process 20,000 images per second.
Denise Moreno Ducheny, senior policy advisor at the University of California, San Diego School of International Relations and Pacific Studies’ Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, will be appointed to a key Obama Administration post, the White House announced Oct. 8.
President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative, a federal research effort designed to help researchers answer fundamental questions about how the brain works, has in recent months awarded scientists at UC San Diego with more than $10 million in grants, cementing the campus’s reputation as one of the world’s top centers for neuroscience research.
Pierre Ouillet has been appointed UC San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, serving as the senior executive officer for all of the campus’s financial resources. A member of the Chancellor’s executive cabinet, Ouillet will join UC San Diego in November 2014. His selection follows an international search.
