Kimberly Prather, distinguished chair in atmospheric chemistry at the University of California San Diego, will receive the Haagen-Smit Clean Air Award from the California Air Resources Board May 18. Board officials said they bestowed the award upon Prather in its Atmospheric Chemistry Research category to acknowledge her “pioneering work that has transformed our understanding of atmospheric aerosols and their impacts on atmospheric chemistry, climate, and the hydrologic cycle.”

Elizabeth Reed, assistant professor in the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, was honored at the April 29 YWCA Tribute to Women & Industry Awards (TWIN) as a TWIN Humanitarian. The awards recognize women in a managerial, executive or leadership role for their extraordinary dedication that inspires, empowers and advances the greater San Diego community.

The University of California San Diego is named the 35th best university in the world, according to Times Higher Education which released its World Reputation Rankings today. The campus moved up five spots compared to last year’s list.

UC San Diego Announces Inaugural Directors for the Institute of Arts and Humanities

University of California San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities launched a new initiative last fall by establishing the Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH)—a cultural hub that fortifies academic, administrative and community outreach efforts within the division. Now, the division has appointed the institute’s first new director and associate director—Luis Alvarez and Mark Hanna, respectively. Both are faculty members in the UC San Diego Department of History. They assume their new leadership posts July 1.

Former Chair of UC San Diego Physics Department and Nobel-Prize-Winner Walter Kohn Dies

Walter Kohn, one of the founding faculty members of the Department of Physics at UC San Diego who received the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry while a professor at UC Santa Barbara, died at his home in Santa Barbara of cancer on April 19. He was 93.

On April 13, eight members of the University of California San Diego community were recognized for their substantial contributions to academic and research integrity on campus. The 6th Annual Integrity Award Ceremony was hosted by UC San Diego’s Academic Integrity Peer Educators, in conjunction with the Academic Integrity Office and Research Ethics Program.
