For the first time, scientists have recorded brain activity in a free-ranging, wild marine mammal, revealing the sleep habits of elephant seals during the months they spend at sea. A team led by Jessica Kendall-Bar, a postdoctoral fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, when she was a graduate student at UC Santa Cruz, found that these seals take short naps while holding their breath on deep dives, averaging just two hours of sleep per day.
