Scientists have known that areas of the brain with similar functions—even those in different brain hemispheres—connect to share signals when the body rests, but they haven’t known how this “resting-state connectivity” occurs. Now, scientists in the Neurophysics Laboratory at the University of California San Diego may have the answer.
The UC San Diego Library recently received a generous gift to create the Schwartz Library Collection Endowment for Melanesian/Anthropology Studies, in honor of UC San Diego Professor Emeritus Theodore (Ted) Schwartz, a prominent figure in psychological anthropology.
Husband and wife Warren and Chris Hellman established the Hellman Fellows Program at UC San Diego in 1995 to support and encourage junior faculty to pursue research projects and creative endeavors with the goal of enhancing their candidacy for tenure. Elisa Quintana didn’t always see herself becoming a NASA scientist. She had a bit of a rocky start at school before transferring to UC San Diego to study physics, where she chose astronaut and physics professor Sally Ride as her advisor. Today, this UC San Diego graduate is searching for exoplanets—planets outside of Earth’s solar system—and inspiring a new generation of students to get interested in science.
