A team of UC San Diego representatives recently got a glimpse of the future of science education during a tour of the Ocean Discovery Institute’s “Living Lab,” an immersive new facility that will engage thousands of students and their families in City Heights, one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the country.
The University of California San Diego has been ranked the 15th best university in the world by the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UC San Diego was also named the world’s third best public college. The campus was named the world’s fourth best public college and nationally, UC San Diego was recognized as the country’s 13th best university.
Like many of you, we, the UC San Diego administration, watched this weekend’s horrific incidents unfold in Virginia with a mix of outrage, frustration and sorrow. We condemn this vile display of inhumanity, hatred and violence; extend our condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives and were injured; and stand in solidarity with our colleagues at the University of Virginia. We extend our support to all members of our campus community, particularly those who feel the impact of this hatred most acutely.
Her dream is to become a pediatrician and be the first in her family to graduate from college. Mandy Che, a senior at the University of California San Diego, is inspired by her parents who journeyed from Vietnam to San Francisco as refugees with no money and little English. She has learned to embrace all opportunities—like conducting faculty-mentored research over the summer at UC San Diego. On Aug. 18, she will present her findings along with 378 other undergraduates at the Summer Research Conference, the largest regional undergraduate research conference in San Diego County.

Then, she became known as a fierce champion of the corner bookstore, those nearly extinct havens for bibliophiles who cherish the opportunity to talk about and be around books. Ann Patchett will share her remarkable life and work as a New York Times bestselling author, independent bookstore owner and literary advocate on Friday, Sept. 8, as part of the University of California San Diego’s Dinner in the Library, an annual benefit to support the UC San Diego Library.
QI Innovation Space member CARI Therapeutics has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to collaboratively develop a biosensor that will detect the presence of opioids in patients in recovery.
