As a child in Vietnam, Huy Nguyen gazed up at the sky with wonder. Space travel and rockets captivated him. A career focused on our universe, however, seemed like unlikely, if not impossible. Yet with hard work, coupled with the support of his family and the community, Nguyen is now pursuing his lifelong passion as an aerospace engineering major at UC San Diego.
UC San Diego alumna Tanya Menendez is revolutionizing manufacturing. The online company Maker’s Row, founded in 2012 by Menendez and partner Matthew Burnett, quickly became a go-to source for the maker movement, connecting DIY artists to professional manufacturers throughout the United States. Design, materials, samples, production, packaging … Maker’s Row includes it all, giving entrepreneurs—like Menendez herself—a safe place to start.
When Monika Langarica was born, she says her parents liked to think the stars had aligned and she was destined for greatness. But it wasn’t the stars that got her to where she is today – working as an immigration attorney with a nonprofit legal center in Northern California. It was the hard work she put in and the tireless support she received from others while she was a student at The Preuss School UCSD, a charter middle and high school for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college.
Mingling the past with the present, the University of California San Diego’s Department of Visual Arts is embarking on a series of programs to celebrate its upcoming 50th anniversary entitled, “VISUAL ARTS@50: ART INTO LIFE.” Kicking off the celebration is “Object Type,” an exhibition that runs May 3 – 13 in the Visual Arts Gallery, at the SME Building on campus.
The University of California San Diego is named the 35th best university in the world, according to Times Higher Education which released its World Reputation Rankings today. The campus moved up five spots compared to last year’s list.
University of California San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities launched a new initiative last fall by establishing the Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH)—a cultural hub that fortifies academic, administrative and community outreach efforts within the division. Now, the division has appointed the institute’s first new director and associate director—Luis Alvarez and Mark Hanna, respectively. Both are faculty members in the UC San Diego Department of History. They assume their new leadership posts July 1.
