UC San Diego Receives $1.15 Million NSF Grant for Biology ‘Boot Camps’
GivingA biology and physics professor at UC San Diego has received a $1.15 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish a series of annual “boot camps” that will educate San Diego-area high school and college students about an emerging field at the intersection of physics and biology called “quantitative biology.”
Waters Corporation Sponsors New Clinical Fellowship at the UC San Diego School of Medicine
GivingWaters Corporation announced today their sponsorship of a new, two-year, postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Fellows will be trained in classical clinical chemistry, laboratory administration and research practices to prepare them for directorship positions at medical schools or hospital-based clinical chemistry laboratories.
Luau and Longboard Invitational Celebrates 20th Anniversary of ‘Surfing for a Cure’ Aug. 18
GivingA surfer and San Diego resident at the time, Kary Mullis won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993 for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction, considered one of the monumental scientific techniques of the 20th century. That year, Mullis also became the founding honorary chair of the Luau and Longboard Invitational, a fundraising event for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center that unites two passions common in San Diego: surfing and science.
Brian Schultz Golf Classic to Raise Funds for UC San Diego Cancer Research August 10

Campus Benefits from Generosity of Irwin and Joan Jacobs with Latest Gift to Fund Cancer Care
GivingA leadership gift of $1 million from San Diego philanthropists Joan and Irwin Jacobs will help UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center change how cancer is treated by supporting the Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy, a newly established center headed by Razelle Kurzrock, M.D. The UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region.
