A new report from PayScale.com lists the University of California, San Diego as the 11th best public university in the U.S. for the average mid-career (15 years of experience) salary of alumni, which is $102,100 per year. The same report also names UC San Diego the 15th best public university for its return on investment (ROI) for alumni who are California residents.
The University of California, San Diego has received a record 94,200 freshman and transfer applications for fall 2015. The university had the third highest number of applicants among the University of California campuses. Within the last decade, UC San Diego has consistently been one of the nation’s top five universities to receive the most applications.
As a young boy growing up in Hong Kong, Tsz Fung Kwan looked forward to reading the famous Jim Davis comic strip Garfield in the Sunday paper. Something about the iconic orange, lasagna-loving cat struck a chord with Kwan, and, at the age of 7, when his family immigrated to the United states in search of a better life, he paid homage to his comic hero by choosing “Garfield” as his new American name.

To deepen understanding and advance scholarship on Greek history, literature, archaeology and culture, UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities has launched an academic Center for Hellenic Studies—a modern forum where local and international faculty, researchers and students can collaborate and study the Hellenic world. The Hellenic Cultural Society and its members have contributed to the center, including $25,000 from the organization and a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor to encourage and inspire additional support.
Playwright Adele Edling Shank, who developed and led UC San Diego’s playwriting program, died Nov. 27 in San Diego. She was 74.
