Grabbing a quick snack and a fresh white volunteer T-shirt, more than 130 members of the Triton Family, including alumni, students, staff, children and more enjoyed their last few minutes in the shade. For the next two hours, volunteers of all ages would spread mulch, build planter boxes, and restore two murals with a fresh coat of paint—all as part of Alumni and Community Engagement’s San Diego Promise.
The class of 2016 will be the first to participate in a new commencement tradition—a campus-wide ceremony at UC San Diego. The ceremony will include the conferring of degrees for graduating seniors from the undergraduate colleges, the Graduate Division, the Rady School of Management and the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.

Brian E. C. Schottlaender, The Audrey Geisel University Librarian at the University of California, San Diego, has been named the 2015 winner of the American Library Association’s Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award. Schottlaender, will receive a cash award and citation during the 2015 ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco this June.
Leading scholars in the field of Black Studies from throughout the UC system attended a two-day symposium on Trajectories in Black Studies: Interdisciplinary Foundations and New Formations at UC San Diego Jan. 30. The symposium was organized by the Black Studies Project at UC San Diego, along with a working group of faculty from other UC campuses.
