UC San Diego Artist Ernest Silva Dies at 65
Painter and sculptor Ernest Silva, professor emeritus of visual arts at UC San Diego, died on Feb. 24. He was 65. Silva joined the faculty in 1979 and retired in 2013.

Donated Dr. Seuss Works May Lead to New Books
Fans of the whimsical collection of Dr. Seuss children’s books may one day be treated to new volumes in the wildly popular series. More than 1,500 new materials from the personal archive of author Theodor Seuss Geisel have been donated by Audrey Geisel to the UC San Diego Library, including a variety of unpublished projects, such as “Cat Ballooning,” “The Pet Shop,” “Bee Watches,” “How Welk Can You Spelk,” “The Clock Book,” and “Arabian Adventures.”

Photographer Fred Lonidier—an alumnus and professor emeritus of UC San Diego's department of visual arts—is among 103 artists whose work has been selected for inclusion in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Described by the New York Times as "America's most closely pored-over show," the 77th Biennial is on view in New York City March 7 through May 25.
In Memoriam: Calit2 Advisory Board Member Phil Smith (1932-2014)
Philip M. Smith, the founding co-chair of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) Advisory Board, passed away on February 16, 2014, after a brief illness.

Robert Hooper knows the powerful role media can play in bringing about social justice. The UC San Diego alumnus who teaches courses on international conflict and the media at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) has worked intensively in nations facing ethnic, religious and sectarian conflict. He has led workshops on media and conflict resolution that enable journalists to report on ethnic and sectarian conflict in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He has put himself in harm’s way through his career, and he credits his ability to do so to the foundation he built at UC San Diego.
Theatre and Dance Professor Wins Design Award
The League of Professional Theatre Women is honoring the work of Judith Dolan, a Tony Award-winning UC San Diego professor of theatre and dance professor and head of design, with the Ruth Morley Design Award.
