$1 Million Gift to Establish Endowment for UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection

They are carefully melded to the earth, absorbed into woodlands and sewn into the fabric of existing structures. The sculptures that make up the internationally renowned Stuart Collection would not exist if they were not at UC San Diego. Each artist was invited to imagine their works on campus, choosing a location that uniquely resonated with them. Launched by the vision and philanthropy of James Stuart DeSilva more than three decades ago, a new $1 million gift by Mary Looker will establish an endowment to help foster the growth of the public art collection for years to come.

ArtPower!’s Filmatic Festival to Explore the Intersection of Science and Cinema

The film industry may have its roots in Los Angeles, but the future of filmmaking and film-going is happening right here at UC San Diego. At the second annual Filmatic Festival—the first of its kind in California—audiences will explore the intersection of film, science and technology in a series of events that include virtual reality demonstrations, one of the first public viewings of 8K digital film, screenings from the “slow art” movement and much more.

Just in time for Passover, a new volume documenting research pertaining to the Bible's grand narrative about Israel’s Exodus from Egypt has been published by Springer Publishing Company.

ArtPower!’s ‘Big Bang’ Benefits Student Engagement with the Arts April 26

Audiences who attend an ArtPower! event don’t just watch a performance—they engage with the artists and get a taste of the creative process. On Sunday, April 26, philanthropists will enjoy a sampling of the organization’s unique approach at the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Co-chaired by Joan Jordan Bernstein and Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive lunch, a live master class with a UC San Diego student string quartet and a special performance by members of the acclaimed Amphion String Quartet. The event is open to the public and all proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund.

Campus-KPBS Partnership Gives Inside Look at UC San Diego Arts

Held last May, the interactive event was part of a new partnership between San Diego’s public radio and TV station and UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities, designed to bring KPBS members to campus for a first-hand experience of the arts here.

UC San Diego Library to Exhibit Wild and Wacky Dr. Seuss Hats Feb. 24–March 22

Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!, an exhibit of original hats from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s personal collection, will be on display in Geisel Library on the UC San Diego campus from Feb. 24 through March 22, just in time for the University’s annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Party on March 2.
