Each summer, San Diego transforms into the heart of the pop culture universe as thousands of movie lovers, gaming experts, comic aficionados and more flock to the annual San Diego Comic-Con. As one of the largest and most well-known entertainment and comic book conventions in the world, the annual event features a wide range of attractions, including exclusive movie exhibitions, actor showcases, industry panels and interactive experiences.

This year, UC San Diego organized special events timed to coincide with Comic-Con, offering fans behind-the-scenes access to iconic franchises like Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons. These special programs and activities took place throughout the week on campus and at UC San Diego Park & Market, allowing attendees to hear directly from actors and artists without needing a coveted convention pass.

At the heart of the event lineup was "The Science of Story," a six-day exploration of storytelling featuring Star Trek stars George Takei and John Cho. In a conversational event titled "A Tale of Two Sulus" held at the Epstein Family Amphitheater, the two actors shared insights about their portrayals of Sulu in different Star Trek eras. UC San Diego’s Comic-Con-inspired lineup also included the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer’s Masterclass, a valuable launchpad for aspiring writers in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Check out more exciting scenes from the the week of programming, including film screenings backed by the San Diego Symphony and interactions with talented illustrators.
