The Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) today unanimously approved a $5.8 million award to University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers to develop a new immunotherapy in which patients’ cells would be equipped with a special receptor that recognizes and targets cancer stem cells, whose survival abilities often render standard therapies ineffective or short-term.

With the goal of accelerating research to prevent blindness, the Downtown San Diego Lions Club Welfare Foundation has made a $400,000 gift to support the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Institute’s BioBank—the largest gift the local organization has made to a single project.

The Institute for the Global Entrepreneur (IGE) at UC San Diego has announced team selections for its new technology accelerator. Five UC San Diego research teams, with innovations ranging from advanced healthcare diagnostics and medical device technologies to next generation LIDAR for autonomous-vehicle navigation, have been selected to join the new campus program.

On Sunday, May 21, the Student Run Free Clinic Project at UC San Diego was recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for excellence in caring for the community. For two decades, the Student-Run Free Clinic Project has helped people of all ages and circumstances access high-quality health care, regardless of their ability to pay. The project assists community members with a range of critical health services, including psychiatric care.

Rock star drummer Rikki Rockett feels very lucky to be on tour with his band, Poison. A year ago, he didn’t know if he would survive tongue cancer but after participating in an immunotherapy clinical trial at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, he was declared cancer-free in July 2016. To give back, Rockett is now asking concert-goers to join him in supporting immunotherapy at Moores Cancer Center.

The SPARK Gala, an annual UC San Diego Health highlight, returns Saturday, May 13 to celebrate recent advances in the fight against cancer and spur on new discoveries. Proceeds from the event will benefit research and patient care at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, including the Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy.
