The Preuss School UCSD Named One of America’s Top High Schools by the Daily Beast

The Preuss School UCSD––a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college––has been named the top “change-making” school in the The Daily Beast’s “America’s Top High Schools 2014” ranking released today. The school was recognized for its ability to prepare low-income and first-generation students for college and beyond. Preuss was also ranked among the top 100 in the College-Bound category.

Philip M. Smith, the founding co-chair of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) Advisory Board, passed away on February 16, 2014, after a brief illness.

Calit2 Director Honored with Golden Goose Award

Larry Smarr, a physicist whose work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on calculating black hole collisions led him to champion a federal commitment to dramatically enhance U.S. computing power – which in turn led to the development of NCSA Mosaic, the precursor to web browsers – was named today as the first 2014 recipient of the Golden Goose Award, which goes to three or four winners annually.

Health Technologies Top List of New Calit2 Research Grants to UC San Diego Faculty

The University of California, San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) has given the green light to 17 new projects funded through the Calit2 Strategic Research Opportunities (CSRO) program. All told, the winning proposals garnered more than $826,000 in support from Calit2 for the year-long projects, effective October 1, 2012.

The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) has announced the second round of its Calit2 Strategic Research Opportunities (CSRO) grant program. Faculty and research scientists at the University of California, San Diego are eligible to submit proposals for funding and in-kind support, with all proposals due no later than July 27, 2012. Winning proposals will be announced in August for one-year projects that will begin effective October 1, 2012.

Calit2 Class of 2012: Undergraduate Scholars Begin Their Summer of Research

The UCSD division of Calit2 this week kicks off a summer of research opportunities for 30 undergraduates representing 17 academic majors. For the 12th summer in a row, Calit2 Summer Undergraduate Scholars are fanning out across campus to work full-time in the labs of Calit2-affiliated faculty members, doing research alongside graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and their advisors.
