UC San Diego Researchers Seek San Diego Residents for Study on Health Effects of Neighborhoods

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego are seeking residents of San Diego County for a study on how the places in which we spend our time (home, work, neighborhoods) affect cancer risk factors. The aim of the “Community of Mine” study is to determine if there is a link between the built environment and biomarkers of cancer risk, such as insulin resistance and inflammation.

Bioengineers cut in half time needed to make high-tech flexible sensors

Bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego, have developed a method that cuts down by half the time needed to make high-tech flexible sensors for medical applications. The advance brings the sensors, which can be used to monitor vital signs and brain activity, one step closer to mass-market manufacturing. The new fabrication process will allow bioengineers to broaden the reach of their research to more clinical settings. It also makes it possible to manufacture the sensors with a process similar to the printing press, said Todd Coleman, a bioengineering professor at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. Researchers describe their work in a recent issue of the journal Sensors.

NIH Grant Awards $2 Million for Research into Privacy and Personal Health Information

The University of California, San Diego has been named the 11th most ethnically diverse college in the nation, according to a new report. Best College Reviews, a ranking service for American colleges and universities, recently released a list of the top 50 ethnically diverse schools.  Statistics and definitions of race/ethnicity for the list were gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics, Diverse Issues in Higher Education and school websites. According to the report, UC San Diego looks at diversity as an opportunity for education.
