August 20, 2014 — An ancient text considered to be the first great work of literature will get a modern treatment Thursday evening at the sixth performance in the Qualcomm Institute’s Initiative for Digital Exploration of Arts and Sciences (IDEAS) series.

June 20, 2014 — Cristina Della Coletta, a professor of Italian and an associate dean at the University of Virginia, has been appointed dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego. Effective Aug. 15, 2014, the appointment follows an extensive national search.

June 18, 2014 — When exploratory divers discovered the underwater Mexican cave site known as Hoyo Negro, the conditions of the cave were so pristine and stable, says archaeologist Dominique Rissolo, “it looked like no one had ever exhaled a breath there.”

May 2, 2014 — A team of archaeologists and engineers from the University of California, San Diego have returned from a field expedition to Quintana Roo, Mexico, where they digitally documented two at-risk archaeological sites – a 16th century church and an ancient Maya cave shrine -- using a high-tech laser scanner.

April 25, 2014 — In a world where people prefer to be alone together, what will become of filmmaking and film-going? It sounds as much like the beginning of a futuristic movie trailer as it does the impetus for a film festival — specifically the inaugural Filmatic Festival, a collaboration between ArtPower! and the Qualcomm Institute at the University of California, San Diego.

April 18, 2014 — Gary Shteyngart, critically acclaimed author of “Absurdistan” and “Super Sad True Love Story,” will appear at the University of California, San Diego on May 12 at 7 p.m. in Mandeville Auditorium. He will be joined onstage by Seth Lerer, dean of the UC San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities, for a conversation about Shteyngart's life and work, followed by a book signing of his latest book, “Little Failure: A Memoir.”

April 16, 2014 — A rich digital archive documenting the UFW Farmworkers’ Movement in Central California from 1962 to 1993 has been acquired by the University of California, San Diego Library. The archive, which was developed by LeRoy Chatfield, includes a wide variety of information on the activities, accomplishments, challenges, and work of Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers who participated in the farmworker movement.

March 11, 2014 — The term ‘selfie’ took on a life of its own in 2013, especially after the Oxford English Dictionary selected it as the ‘international word of the year’. The Internet and mobile phones were awash in self-portraits as consumers purchased more smartphones with front-facing cameras – turning the selfie into a truly worldwide phenomenon. Now comes more evidence that selfies have come to inhabit a unique place in world culture – a place with a Web address of its own: Selfiecity.net.

February 25, 2014 — Arts patrons and campus supporters will come together Sunday, April 6 for the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Chaired by ArtPower! supporter Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive brunch and special performance by the Escher String Quartet. In addition, donors Joan Jordan Bernstein and Rita and Richard Atkinson will be recognized for their generosity, vision and leadership support. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund. The event is open to the public.

February 18, 2014 — The University of California, San Diego and Comhear, Inc., a transformational, audio technology and wearables company, today announced that they are collaborating on the latest in audio conferencing technology.
