Washington Monthly Recognizes UC San Diego as a Top Five U.S. University

Washington Monthly has named the University of California San Diego the second best public university in the U.S. for promoting upward social mobility, producing groundbreaking research and serving the nation’s public interest. The national magazine’s annual rankings recognize what universities are doing for the public good and have consistently rated UC San Diego among the country’s best colleges for over a decade.

UC San Diego Archaeologist to Fly Explorers Club Flag on Desert Land and Sea Expedition in Israel

On Aug. 29, UC San Diego archaeologist Tom Levy leads an expedition for the first-ever desert land-and-sea integrated cyber-archaeology project to be carried out in Israel, and the expedition will be flying The Explorers Club flag (as Levy did in 2011 with an expedition to southern Jordan).

A $100K Gift from Cognex Supports Research Connecting Deep Learning and   3-D Image Reconstruction

Applying deep learning principles to 3-D image reconstruction could lead to advances in robotics, medical imaging, autonomous vehicle navigation, tele-medicine, and more.

Prestigious Rankings Name UC San Diego 15th Best University in the World

The University of California San Diego has been ranked the 15th best university in the world by the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UC San Diego was also named the world’s third best public college. The campus was named the world’s fourth best public college and nationally, UC San Diego was recognized as the country’s 13th best university.

Ann Patchett will share her remarkable life and work as a New York Times bestselling author, independent bookstore owner and literary advocate on Friday, Sept. 8, as part of the University of California San Diego’s Dinner in the Library, an annual benefit to support the UC San Diego Library.

Scientists Find New Way to Map Differences in the Brain

A team from the UC San Diego Department of Cognitive Science and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has, for the first time, profiled chemical modifications in the DNA of individual neurons, giving the most detailed information yet on what makes one brain cell different from its neighbor. The novel approach enabled the team to sort neurons into subtypes and create new kinds of brain maps. The study also identifies new subtypes of neurons.

UC San Diego Goes Behind the Scenes of SpaceX Rocket Launch Aug. 14

The University of California San Diego boasts more than 100 graduates who have gone on to work at NASA, including 38 alumni who work at SpaceX. This is the campus where Sally Ride—the first American woman in space—taught physics and where, just recently, scientists contributed to the discovery of the first-known system of seven Earth-sized planets around a single star. This rich tradition of space exploration and commitment to inspiring the next generation of scientists is one of the reasons UC San Diego was selected to send a social media ambassador to the upcoming launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The launch will take place on Monday, August 14 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Alumna Kaitlin Solimine’s (MFA, ’11) “Empire of Glass” demonstrates that excellence with its inclusion on The Center for Fiction's 2017 First Novel Prize long list. Her premier novel, which emerged from her MFA thesis, is an investigation into the workings of human memory and the veracity of oral history that pushes the boundaries between language and form in profound ways.
