UC San Diego’s Celebration of Native American Heritage Month Underway

On Nov. 2, UC San Diego kicked off Native American Heritage Month, an annual campus celebration honoring the history, culture and achievements of Native American peoples and tribes. From art exhibits and documentary screenings to a lecture by U.S. Gold medal Olympian Billy Mills, this year’s events are designed to celebrate achievements and to demonstrate support for Native American students and local tribal communities, while raising awareness of issues faced by indigenous communities nationwide. The majority of events will take place in November of this year and extend into 2018.

UC San Diego’s Energy Conservation Efforts Win Top Prize in National Freezer Contest

The University of California San Diego’s commitment to reducing energy use recently garnered the campus a first place award in the North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge. The nationwide best practice competition encourages laboratories to reduce the environmental and financial costs of ultra-low temperature freezers.

UC San Diego Receives Three International CASE Awards

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has recognized UC San Diego for excellence in advertising, branding and video production in the 2017 Circle of Excellence Awards. The international competition recognizes educational institutions and nonprofits annually for outstanding work in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, marketing and fundraising for higher education. This year’s awards program received 3,364 entries from 715 member institutions worldwide. Entries were considered by category and judged by peer professionals, who selected 366 winners from over 200 member institutions—including three from UC San Diego.

UC San Diego Police Officer Receives MADD Commendation

If not included, the first paragraph from release will be used): UC San Diego Police Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia and his wife, Leah, were recently commended by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) San Diego County for their volunteer work over the past three years. The couple was recognized for their continued efforts to garner support for the organization by recruiting volunteers from UC San Diego’s Community Service Officer (CSO) program, and by promoting awareness of driving under the influence within UC San Diego communities such as Greek Life on Campus.

UC San Diego to be Recognized for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

UC San Diego will receive two 2017 Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Best Practice Awards for its electric vehicle leasing/charging program and a monitoring-based commissioning project. The annual awards highlight achievements that University of California and California State University campuses have made through innovative and effective energy efficiency projects and sustainable operations.

Preuss School Teacher Anne Artz Receives Fulbright Award

Anne Artz, a teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, will spend her summer vacation a little differently this year. Approximately one week after she finishes the school year on June 23, Artz will head to Vietnam for a six-week teaching stint as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term grant.

Six recipients were honored for their efforts to share information about and prioritize sustainability in UC San Diego’s education, research, planning, and operations and outreach programs.

UC San Diego Awards Campus Champions of Integrity

On April 19, one department and 11 members of the UC San Diego community were recognized at the 7th Annual Integrity Awards Ceremony for their contributions to academic, research and professional integrity on campus. The awards were hosted by the Academic Integrity Office and Research Ethics Program to honor our university’s commitment to uphold the six pillars of integrity—responsibility, honesty, fairness, respect, trustworthiness and courage.

UC San Diego Chief Small Business Officer Named Minority Small Business Champion of the Year

Anthony Singleton, UC San Diego’s chief small business officer, has been named 2017 Small Business Administration (SBA) Minority Small Business Champion of the Year by the U.S. SBA’s San Diego District Office. The Minority Small Business Champion of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to minority-owned small businesses and has gone above and beyond to ensure that they succeed. Nominated by the North San Diego County Business Development Center (SBDC), Singleton was recognized for his outreach efforts and community service to small businesses within the San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Sun God Then and Now

Since its inception in 1983, the annual Sun God Festival has been one of the most anticipated student events at UC San Diego, providing attendees with live music from nationally touring artists, interactive activities, carnival rides and more. This year’s Sun God Festival on Saturday, April 29, will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the festivities.
