SDSC’s ‘Comet’ Supercomputer Helps Confirm Gravitational Wave Discovery

February 24, 2016

This month’s announcement by the National Science Foundation that scientists for the first time detected gravitational waves in the universe as hypothesized by Albert Einstein 100 years ago has opened up a new era of exploration for astronomers and astrophysicists. The NSF-funded Comet supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, which went into operation in May 2015, was one of several high-performance computers used by researchers to help confirm that landmark discovery before a formal announcement was made.

SDSC and Intel Open Second Intel Parallel Computing Center at SDSC

February 9, 2016

Intel has opened a second parallel computing center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), at the University of California, San Diego. The focus of this new engagement is on earthquake research, including detailed computer simulations of major seismic activity that can be used to better inform and assist disaster recovery and relief efforts.

SDSC’s ‘Comet’ Aids in Discovery of New Organometallic Compounds

January 22, 2016

Selective oxidation plays a key role in the production of compounds widely used throughout the chemical industry. Now, according to a new study using advanced computational resources including SDSC’s Comet supercomputer, these materials and other compounds, such as those used to make polyester resins, could undergo a new catalysis process that uses less energy and generates fewer by-products than current methods.
