University of California, San Diego students, staff and faculty are doing their part to help prepare families in need for the holidays with the Tritons Rock Hunger food drive Oct. 5–28. The drive is part of a countywide Colleges Rock Hunger contest, hosted by the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. Food and dollars raised through the contest will make up the first official donation to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank’s 2012 Holiday Food Drive.

“I felt like I was making a difference when I was interning at UC San Diego, but now I feel like my work is making a global difference” said University of California, San Diego alum Ahmina Ahmad, whose green job experience at UC San Diego helped her win her current position with the environment and conservation department at Walt Disney Company.

New students poured onto Ridgewalk Monday afternoon for the premier resource fair of Welcome Week. The annual fair traditionally follows the Triton Power Hour and showcases UC San Diego’s various academic majors, recreation clubs, athletics and several central services.

When alumnus Don Murphy, '75, was asked to speak to UC San Diego’s new student Welcome Convocation, he asked his son for advice for the speech to which his son replied, “Ah well, I walked out on my last convocation. It was so boring.”

“Wellness and Healing; Family and Community” is the theme of the 7th annual California Native American Day Celebration at the University of California, San Diego. The celebration, running from Sept. 28 through May, 2013, will feature events that pay homage to the past, present and future identities of San Diego’s Native American tribes.

Students at the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University are collaborating to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center (MBAC) in an effort to help the center earn a platinum Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
