he University of California, San Diego takes the No. 4 spot among large California schools on Peace Corps’ 2013 Top Colleges list, ranking No. 13 nationally. The annual list recognizes the highest volunteer-producing colleges and universities for small, medium, large and graduate institutions. There are currently 70 undergraduate alumni from UC San Diego serving overseas in the Peace Corps.

It’s that time of year again: flu season. The epidemic this year is widespread, afflicting millions in every state across the country. This year’s flu strain has been reported as particularly virulent, but there are essential steps that the UC San Diego community is encouraged to take to prevent contracting and spreading the flu.

This year marks two momentous anniversaries in U.S. history. 150 years ago, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that released enslaved Africans from bondage. A century later, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which helped shape civil and economic rights for African Americans and all U.S. citizens. The significance of these two benchmarks of U.S. history will be recognized during the University of California, San Diego’s celebration of Black History Month.

The University of California, San Diego has received a record 82,340 freshman and transfer applications for fall 2013. The university received the third highest number of applicants among the University of California campuses. In recent years, UC San Diego has been among the nation’s top five universities with the most applications.

One of the biggest video game tournaments on the West Coast, the University of California, San Diego’s Winter Game Fest, is expected to have more games, attendees and prizes this year than ever before. The eight annual festival will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 18 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 19-20 in the Price Center Ballrooms East and West. The event is free and open to the public.

The University of California, San Diego is launching a new tradition with the first-annual Sibling Weekend, Friday, Jan. 11 through Saturday, Jan. 12. Students are invited to host their brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends, ages 7-16, to share the UC San Diego student experience and participate in a variety of activities.

A recent college salary report by PayScale.com ranked the University of California, San Diego the fourth best public university for its return on investment for alumni who are California residents.
