San Diego Area Elected Officials Welcomed to Campus

Now that the voters have spoken and elected officials have settled into office, the Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board (CCAB) invited new and incumbent representatives from around San Diego to a welcome reception on campus Feb. 15 to learn more about UC San Diego and its positive impact on the region.

UC San Diego Rides Wave of Recognition as Top Surfing School

UC San Diego has again been named one of the nation’s best schools for surfing, taking the No. 2 spot in The Surf Channel’s list of top 10 universities for surfers. The channel attributes the ranking to the university’s proximity to the “shreddible” breaks at Black’s Beach and its “epic” surf team, which has won six National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) titles.

Healthcare Services for Rural Sub-Saharan Africa Within Reach, According to New UC San Diego Study

A new paper published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization has determined that providing rural sub-Saharan Africans a close-to-client health system by paid, full-time community health workers by 2015 would cost $2.6 billion per year, or just $6.86 per person covered by the program.

UC San Diego Ranks No. 13 Nationally on the Peace Corps Top Colleges List

he University of California, San Diego takes the No. 4 spot among large California schools on Peace Corps’ 2013 Top Colleges list, ranking No. 13 nationally. The annual list recognizes the highest volunteer-producing colleges and universities for small, medium, large and graduate institutions. There are currently 70 undergraduate alumni from UC San Diego serving overseas in the Peace Corps.

This year marks two momentous anniversaries in U.S. history. 150 years ago, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that released enslaved Africans from bondage. A century later, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which helped shape civil and economic rights for African Americans and all U.S. citizens. The significance of these two benchmarks of U.S. history will be recognized during the University of California, San Diego’s celebration of Black History Month.

The University of California, San Diego has received a record 82,340 freshman and transfer applications for fall 2013. The university received the third highest number of applicants among the University of California campuses. In recent years, UC San Diego has been among the nation’s top five universities with the most applications.

Record-Breaking Winter Game Fest Poised to Attract Thousands of Video Gamers

One of the biggest video game tournaments on the West Coast, the University of California, San Diego’s Winter Game Fest, is expected to have more games, attendees and prizes this year than ever before. The eight annual festival will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 18 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 19-20 in the Price Center Ballrooms East and West. The event is free and open to the public.
