Chávez throughout the months of April and May with a series of events which will include a lecture from Hilda Solis, former U.S. Secretary of Labor; a celebration of Chicano Park’s 43rd anniversary; film screenings and several outreach events with the San Diego community.

UC San Diego will open its doors to admitted students, the campus community and aspiring college students from middle and high school for the second annual Triton Day on Saturday, April 6th. The campus is expected to have 20,000 attendees for the day, which will feature an array of activities ranging from campus tours to college workshops, student festivals and live entertainment, all celebrating what it means to be a Triton.

The 2014 edition of the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools guidebook, released today, highly ranks the University of California, San Diego’s professional schools in engineering and medicine, as well as its academic Ph.D. programs in the social sciences and humanities.

John Moore, professor of linguistics at the University of California, San Diego, has been appointed the new provost of John Muir College, effective September 1, 2013. Moore, who joined UC San Diego’s faculty in 1992, will be replacing visual arts professor Susan Smith, who is stepping down after seven years of service as provost.

Sequestration — a mechanism for automatic spending cuts — went into effect March 1 and will eventually trigger, over the next eight years, more than a trillion dollars in cuts to federal programs. These cuts, projected to have a significant impact on UC San Diego research and other areas, will continue for the foreseeable future until a bipartisan solution is found.

The Times Higher Education has placed the University of California, San Diego as the 34th top university in the publication’s World Reputation Rankings. UC San Diego moved up two spots from 36th last year in the annual rankings.

Now that the voters have spoken and elected officials have settled into office, the Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board (CCAB) invited new and incumbent representatives from around San Diego to a welcome reception on campus Feb. 15 to learn more about UC San Diego and its positive impact on the region.

UC San Diego has again been named one of the nation’s best schools for surfing, taking the No. 2 spot in The Surf Channel’s list of top 10 universities for surfers. The channel attributes the ranking to the university’s proximity to the “shreddible” breaks at Black’s Beach and its “epic” surf team, which has won six National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) titles.
