The countdown for the historic visit by the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, has begun. The Nobel Peace Prize winner will soon meet many of UC San Diego’s Nobel Prize winning scientists as well as other outstanding researchers and students.

Philanthropists, community leaders, health care visionaries, architects and contractors, along with faculty and staff of UC San Diego, gathered April 9 to celebrate the official start of construction for the Jacobs Medical Center, a ten-story, multi-specialty medical center that will open in La Jolla in 2016.

One of the challenges James Cameron faces in exploring the Mariana Trench is that no light is able to penetrate its extreme depths. That’s where the engineering know-how of Kevin Hardy and other Scripps researchers comes into play. Hardy, a Scripps research engineer, has developed telephone-booth-size landers that are dropped to the seafloor.

The University of California, San Diego again ranked 6th among top U.S. universities in total research and development expenditures for fiscal year 2010, with $580,279,000 in federal R&D money and $943,219,000 in total R&D expenditures. The numbers were announced by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The University of California, San Diego and the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation have agreed to establish the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination (ACCCHI) at UC San Diego. The agreement was signed in conjunction with the foundation’s annual international Clarke Awards held on April 12 in Washington, D.C.

The UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center is the first hospital-based project in the region to receive LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Representatives from the USGBC – San Diego Chapter recently presented a plaque to the building project and design team.
