Student involvement on campus can lead to more than just a great college experience. It can also lead to a job. Garron Engstrom is a prime example. He graduated last year with a degree in cognitive science and now works as an Interaction Designer at Mitchell International in San Diego. In this interview, he talks about how his work as a student ambassador led him to his current position, and he also offers advice for new graduates.

Students at the Jacobs School of Engineering are working to develop a cheaper, lighter, multi-function microscope that could be used in clinics in developing countries. Their prototype will be flown to Mozambique this summer and field tested at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in the country’s capital, Maputo.

UC San Diego’s Academic Senate has awarded the 2012 Distinguished Teaching Awards to five senate members and one non-senate member, and Excellent Teaching Awards to four graduate students, in recognition of their exemplary teaching skills.

A total of $487,500 has been awarded to the 2012-2013 Hellman Faculty Fellows at the University of California, San Diego. The award supports 22 junior faculty members in their research and scholarly work as they strive for tenure with the university.

They came. They saw. They celebrated. Almost 2,500 alumni returned to UC San Diego for UCSD Alumni’s annual Alumni Weekend, held May 31 through June 3. Attendees enjoyed reconnecting with friends, former classmates and faculty, while revisiting the campus and recalling many UC San Diego memories. Both a kickoff to the start of summer and a time to celebrate all things UC San Diego, the annual weekend brought together many sections of the Triton family.

Each year, approximately 8,000 Americans are bitten by venomous snakes. On average, 800 or so bites occur annually in California, home to an abundance of snake species, but only one family is native and venomous: rattlesnakes. In San Diego County, the number of rattlesnake bites is increasing as well as the toxicity of the attack.

An international team of researchers, led by scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, suggest that inactivation of two specific genes related to the immune system may have conferred selected ancestors of modern humans with improved protection from some pathogenic bacterial strains, such as Escherichia coli K1 and Group B Streptococci, the leading causes of sepsis and meningitis in human fetuses, newborns and infants.

Selena Kuo and Elham Rahimy, undergraduates at the University of California, San Diego, have both received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the most prestigious award in the country conferred upon undergraduates studying the sciences. The scholarship awards $7,500 per year to support outstanding students who plan to pursue careers in science, engineering and math.

Celebrated alumni of the University of California, San Diego that include Ira Rubenstein, executive vice president at Twentieth Century Fox and actor James Avery will speak to 8,182 graduating students for the campus’s 2012 commencement ceremonies. The majority of UC San Diego’s 11 commencement ceremonies will take place June 15-17, preceded by the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences May 19 and the School of Medicine’s June 3 graduation.
