More than 1,700 parents and family members participated in UC San Diego’s fifth annual All-Campus Family Weekend, where students and their parents, guardians and friends gathered to explore all that makes UC San Diego a world-renowned university.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Thousands of scientists and policymakers around the world have contributed to the ongoing summaries of climate research and dozens of Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers have participated to varying degrees since the first report was issued in 1990.

Harry Markowitz is best known for his pioneering work in modern portfolio theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1990. Modern portfolio theory outlines the concept of investment diversification to optimize reward while minimiz¬ing risk.

At 69, Robert Fry Engle III is a busy man. Professor emeritus and research professor of economics at UC San Diego, Engle teaches finance at the New York University Stern School of Business, where he is also the founding director of the Volatility Institute.

Tom Hayden – activist, founder of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and former Calif. state Senator and Assemblyman – will deliver a talk titled “Student Movements: Then and Now” at 6 p.m., Nov. 5 at the Robinson Auditorium on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Chicano/a~Latino/a Arts and Humanities (CLAH) minor, Thurgood Marshall College, the Department of Political Science and the Department of literature.

The San Diego chapter of ARCS® Foundation, Inc., awarded $232,500 in fellowships to support 31 graduate students at the University of California, San Diego, for the 2012-13 academic year. The ARCS Foundation, a national volunteer women’s organization, provides awards to top students studying science, medicine and engineering.

Several University of California, San Diego graduate students will receive full financial support over the next few years thanks to an additional $500,000 gift from the Robertson Foundation for Government. This most recent gift is an extension of the foundation’s initial commitment of $450,000, which was pledged in 2010 and created the Robertson Fellows Program at UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS).

The Center for Mindfulness at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine announces early registration for the 2013 Bridging the Hearts and Minds of Youth Conference, February 1 – 3 in San Diego, California. Mindfulness leader Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD – along with his wife Myla and experts from across the U.S. – will show participants how to support and foster the growth of mindfulness and happiness, especially among youths.
