In the first study of its type, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have looked at the health threat to pregnant women with a history of Kawasaki disease (KD), concluding that the risks are low with informed management and care.

Times Higher Education has placed the University of California, San Diego as the 40th top university in the publication’s World Reputation Rankings. The Reputation Rankings complement the Times’ annual World University Rankings, published in fall 2013, in which UC San Diego was also ranked 40th.

Breast cancer patients with high levels of vitamin D in their blood are twice as likely to survive the disease as women with low levels of this nutrient, report University of California, San Diego School of Medicine researchers in the March issue of Anticancer Research.

Light can trigger coordinated, wavelike motions of atoms in atom-thin layers of crystal, scientists have shown. The waves, called phonon polaritons, are far shorter than light waves and can be "tuned" to particular frequencies and amplitudes by varying the number of layers of crystal, they report in the early online edition of Science March 7.

Painter and sculptor Ernest Silva, professor emeritus of visual arts at UC San Diego, died on Feb. 24. He was 65. Silva joined the faculty in 1979 and retired in 2013.

UC San Diego’s Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center (SARC) has been successful in developing innovative and proactive violence prevention programs for the campus community. A new SARC program called “Who’s Checking You In/Out?” was recently launched reduce the risk of cyberstalking and increase online safety.

Fulfilling a promise to the local community, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla returned to Southeast San Diego Thursday to convey how community feedback has helped shape UC San Diego’s strategic plan. Last year, UC San Diego hosted two Community Town Hall meetings to seek input about strengthening pathways to higher education for underserved students, increase the campus’s presence in South County, and meet the community’s economic and workforce needs. The feedback shaped the campus’s first strategic plan, which is nearly complete.

Sneha Jayaprakash, a sophomore at UC San Diego, is passionate about two things: computer science and social change. As part of the 2013 Microsoft YouthSpark Challenge for Change contest, she developed a winning proposal for a mobile app to engage students with volunteerism and social issues—and received a prize of $2,500 to get the project going. Now, with an additional $10,000 awarded by the Microsoft Imagine Fund last month, Jayaprakash is getting the opportunity to turn her idea into a successful startup.

Emphasizing that it’s never too early to think about college, the Saturday, April 5 event offers information about the college prep necessary so that qualified students who want to go to college can, regardless of income or ethnicity.

After all the work they put into the online course they inaugurated in the fall, Pavel Pevzner, a professor of computer science and engineering, and instructors Phillip Compeau and Nikolay Vyahhi have concrete evidence that it was a success even beyond the impressive number of people who signed up for the course – more than 30,000 in all.
