Jordan Haug, a Ph. D. candidate in Anthropology, has been named the 1st prize winner of the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, a competition sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA), the Fellowship of American Bibliographic Societies (FABS), and the Center for the Book and the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress.

After an academic theater career that spanned nearly 40 years, Arthur Wagner—founding chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of California, San Diego—is still passionate about training the next generation of theater and dance artists. As a result of budgetary cuts at the University of California, funds for student productions have all but dried up.

Free fatty acids created during the digestion of infant formula cause cellular death that may contribute to necrotizing enterocolitis, a severe intestinal condition that is often fatal and occurs most commonly in premature infants, according to a study by University of California, San Diego bioengineers.

Biologists at UC San Diego have succeeded in genetically engineering algae to produce a complex and expensive human therapeutic drug used to treat cancer.
Their achievement opens the door for making these and other “designer” proteins in larger quantities and much more cheaply than can now be made from mammalian cells.

Just like the bones that hold up your body, your cells have their own scaffolding that holds them up. This scaffolding, known as the extracellular matrix, or ECM, not only props up cells but also provides attachment sites, or “sticky spots,” to which cells can bind, just as bones hold muscles in place.

Aging has been viewed as a period of progressive decline in physical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning, and is viewed by many as the “number one public health problem” facing Americans today. This negative view of aging contrasts with results of a comprehensive study of 1,006 older adults in San Diego by researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Stanford University.

Sheldon C. Engelhorn will serve on the University of California Board of Regents effective July 1, 2013. A selection committee consisting of leadership from UCSD Alumni Board of Directors and the UC San Diego Foundation Board chose Engelhorn, a San Diego-based entrepreneur, university leader and philanthropist.

The campus-wide strategic planning process is officially underway and all campus members are invited to participate throughout the academic year. The first two town hall meetings will take place on Dec. 6 and Dec. 10, and are geared toward faculty and staff because students are getting ready for finals’ week. Student-focused town halls will be scheduled for early next year.

TEDxUCSD is debuting at UC San Diego in May 2013. Created in the spirit of TED’s mission of “Ideas Worth Spreading,” TEDxUCSD is a student-run initiative bringing together leading thinkers and doers to share ideas that matter in and to any discipline. Through a local forum, TEDxUCSD hopes to spark deep discussion and connection to inspire people to change their lives, their futures and ultimately their world.
