Two UC San Diego faculty members have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies, which includes accomplished leaders from academe, business, public affairs, the humanities and the arts.

Igor Grant, MD, FRCP(C), an internationally recognized neuropsychiatrist, whose research interests have ranged from the neurobiology of HIV/AIDS and substance abuse, psychobiology of stress, to the therapeutic potential of medicinal cannabis, has been named the new Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Elizabeth Kim, Joshua Young Yang and Maarouf Saad are the University of California, San Diego’s latest undergraduate students to be acknowledged with the national Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program Award for their research in the sciences. Kim and Yang were selected to receive the scholarship—regarded as the nation’s most prestigious award bestowed upon students studying the sciences—and will each receive $7,500. Saad was awarded with an honorable mention for his contributions as well.

Most drugs used to treat lung, breast and pancreatic cancers also promote drug-resistance and ultimately spur tumor growth. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered a biomarker called CD61 on the surface of drug-resistant tumors that appears responsible for inducing tumor metastasis by enhancing the stem cell-like properties of cancer cells.

Gary Shteyngart, critically acclaimed author of “Absurdistan” and “Super Sad True Love Story,” will appear at the University of California, San Diego on May 12 at 7 p.m. in Mandeville Auditorium. The University of California, San Diego has admitted 24,552 freshmen for the fall 2014 term. The new freshmen were selected from a record 73,437 applications. The university anticipates enrolling a diverse freshman class of 4,900 of students.
