Small Loop in Human Prion Protein Prevents Chronic Wasting Disease

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) affects North American elk and deer, but has not been observed in humans. Using a mouse model that expresses an altered form of the normal human prion protein, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have determined why the human proteins aren’t corrupted when exposed to the elk prions. Their study identifies a small loop in the human prion protein that confers resistance to chronic wasting disease.

Molecular Link between Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Reveals Potential Therapy

Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered that the inflammatory molecule LTB4 promotes insulin resistance, a first step in developing type 2 diabetes. What’s more, the team found that genetically removing the cell receptor that responds to LTB4, or blocking it with a drug, improves insulin sensitivity in obese mice. The study is published Feb. 23 by Nature Medicine.

UC San Diego Again Recognized as Top College by Peace Corps

The University of California, San Diego ranks 15th nationally among large schools on the Peace Corps’ 2015 Top Colleges list. This marks the fifth consecutive year that UC San Diego has been named in the top 15 in Peace Corps’ rankings and the ninth straight year that it has appeared in the top 25.

UC San Diego Unveils New Black Legacy Mural

From Harriet Tubman to Nelson Mandela and Angela Davis, UC San Diego’s newest public artwork portrays more than two dozen historical figures and national leaders, as well as several UC San Diego alumni and professors. Unveiled at the Price Center on Feb. 11, the Black Legacy Mural was created by San Diego artist Andrea Rushing to honor the contributions of black leaders throughout history and promote a sense of belonging among current and future students.

Tritons Give Back with Day of Service

Grabbing a quick snack and a fresh white volunteer T-shirt, more than 130 members of the Triton Family, including alumni, students, staff, children and more enjoyed their last few minutes in the shade. For the next two hours, volunteers of all ages would spread mulch, build planter boxes, and restore two murals with a fresh coat of paint—all as part of Alumni and Community Engagement’s San Diego Promise.

Rady School of Management Launches Center for Business Analytics

The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego has launched the Center for Business Analytics, which will serve as a platform for research and innovation in big data analysis for private businesses and public agencies. Through the center, Rady School faculty experts will work with corporate partners to identify critical business issues where using big data can provide value and competitive advantage. The center will also coordinate educational initiatives such as courses, programs and workshops for the business community, Rady School students and students from across the UC San Diego campus.

All-Campus Commencement Ceremony Set for 2016

The class of 2016 will be the first to participate in a new commencement tradition—a campus-wide ceremony at UC San Diego. The ceremony will include the conferring of degrees for graduating seniors from the undergraduate colleges, the Graduate Division, the Rady School of Management and the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.

Doctorate Program Will Study Substance Abuse and Its Consequences

A new Joint Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use has been launched by the Division of Global Public Health in the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and San Diego State University’s School of Social Work. The program will emphasize research devoted to studying the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs – and related social and health consequences.
