UC San Diego Students Develop Games to Teach Kids ‘Cool Ways to Recycle’

Twenty-five students, only half of them from computer science, showcased their final presentations in Computer Science and Engineering 198 – a set of interactive mini-games called RecyCool, designed to start teaching third-graders how and why to recycle.

Six-Story Steel Frame Building Undergoes Seismic Testing on World’s Largest Outdoor Shake Table

A team of engineers is testing a six-story, lightweight steel-frame building on the world’s largest outdoor seismic shake table this month at the University of California San Diego. The goal is to better understand how cold-formed steel structures withstand earthquakes and the fires that may follow. This is the tallest cold-formed steel-frame structure to ever undergo tests on a shake table.

UC San Diego Receives Four International CASE Awards

More than 3,350 stories, magazines, design portfolios and other demonstrations of outstanding work were considered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for this year’s Circle of Excellence Awards. The national awards program recognizes superior accomplishments in the fields of advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing. UC San Diego was honored with four awards for creatively and effectively engaging internal and external audiences through print and digital publications.

Raul Carranza, who is graduating with a degree in political science from UC San Diego, is not your typical student. The Chula Vista native, who will soon apply to law school and plans to run for public office someday, is passionate about American politics, cares about social justice, studies hard and has a wry sense of humor—but that is not all that sets him apart. Carranza was born with muscular dystrophy and only has limited use of his right thumb.

Engineers Develop a New Biosensor Chip for Detecting DNA Mutations
