Born and raised in Shelton, a small town in Washington State, Keyzers-Flanagan joined the Marines at age 18 so she could travel the world. Soon after, she became a Marine security guard, protecting U.S. Embassies around the globe. The senior attended college on a part-time basis until she enrolled in UC San Diego two years ago. An international studies-sociology major, Keyzers-Flanagan is also earning a minor in international migration studies. She plans to work for the U.S. State Department after graduation.

Frank Montoya had been working at UC San Diego for eight years when 9/11 happened, a terrorist attack that shook the world, the nation and the campus community. For Montoya, the event would be especially life-altering because the Navy Reservist was recalled to active duty and mobilized to support military operations in the Middle East, leaving behind his family and job at the university.

With just one bicycle enforcement officer on the UC San Diego Police Department, gathering up the abandoned bikes can present a challenge. This summer, however, the department tried something different. At the suggestion of Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia, who oversees the department’s Community Service Officer Program, CSOs began assisting with bike abatement. The team of student officers fanned out across campus dutifully tagging bikes with warnings, then helping to remove abandoned bikes.

Engineers at the University of California San Diego have fabricated the first semiconductor-free, optically-controlled microelectronic device. Using metamaterials, engineers were able to build a microscale device that shows a 1,000 percent increase in conductivity when activated by low voltage and a low power laser.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego will host a node in the Pacific Research Platform at this year’s International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC16), in Salt Lake City, Utah November 14-17. The aim is to achieve large data transfers over long-distance networks to the limits possible using single personal computers of the type that researchers may have in their labs in the near future.
