The University of California is first in the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents Ranking for 2015. The report, which was released today, is published by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO). The ranking utilizes data acquired from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to highlight the important role patents play in university research and innovation.

UC San Diego has been ranked the 17th best university in the world, up four spots compared to last year, by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The fifth-annual global rankings measure universities’ quality of research, faculty, influence, enterprise and successful alumni.

Henrik Christensen, one of the most influential robotics researchers in the world, is joining the University of California San Diego. He will direct the UC San Diego Contextual Robotics Institute and serve as a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Christensen is leaving his post as executive director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the Georgia Institute of Technology to come to UC San Diego.

An international team of researchers has demonstrated a new way to increase the robustness and energy storage capability of a particular class of “lithium-rich” cathode materials—by using a carbon dioxide-based gas mixture to create oxygen vacancies at the material’s surface. Researchers said the treatment improved the energy density—the amount of energy stored per unit mass—of the cathode material by up to 30 to 40 percent.

The University of California San Diego has admitted a record 30,273 freshman and 9,802 transfer students for the fall 2016 term. The number of new freshmen is up 3,773 compared to last year and there is also an increase among transfer admits by 1,652 students. Of the 40,075 admitted students, the university anticipates enrolling a diverse class of 5,660 freshmen and 2,933 transfers.

William F. Loomis, an emeritus distinguished professor of biology who spent 50 years as a faculty member at UC San Diego, died June 30 from cardiac arrest in his campus office while working on a manuscript. A resident of Del Mar, CA, he was 76.
