Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have found that the breast cancer drug tamoxifen gives white blood cells a boost, better enabling them to respond to, ensnare and kill bacteria in laboratory experiments. Tamoxifen treatment in mice also enhances clearance of the antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogen MRSA and reduces mortality.

Jerry Brown signed into law Oct. 9 legislation that will improve the state’s ability to respond to major precipitation episodes and better manage water supply by expanding climate research on the causes of drought and flood led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.

Many leukemias are caused by loss of the enzyme Pten. Some anti-leukemia treatments work by inhibiting another enzyme called Shp2. Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have now found that mice lacking both of these enzymes can’t produce and sustain enough red blood cells. The study, published October 12 by PNAS, helps explain why anemia is a common side effect of anti-cancer drugs that target enzymes involved in tumor growth.

For the eighth consecutive year, the University of California, San Diego Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) will host a series of educational events to broaden understanding of the past, foster tolerance, and preserve the memory of victims and survivors of the Holocaust. With their tiny forelimbs and long hindlimbs and feet, jerboas are oddly proportioned creatures that look something like a pint-size cross between a kangaroo and the common mouse. How these 33 species of desert-dwelling rodents from Northern Africa and Asia evolved their remarkable limbs over the past 50 million years from a five-toed, quadrupedal ancestor shared with the modern mouse to the three-toed bipedal jerboa is detailed in a paper published in this week’s issue of the journal Current Biology.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has named UC San Diego alumnus Harry Helling as its new executive director. Helling, who started his career more than 30 years ago as an associate curator at the T. Wayland Vaughan Aquarium on the Scripps Oceanography campus, is a passionate leader with extensive experience communicating and interpreting science for the public.

In his first year with ArtPower, Jordan Peimer spent a lot of time in the audience, watching performances through the eyes of students and community members. He noted what piqued their interest and stimulated their curiosity. That feedback became the basis for ArtPower’s 2015-16 season, the first curated under the leadership of Peimer, who joined ArtPower as executive director last October.
