Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination showcases new video installation for an exhibition in Germany that opened on Feb. 11. Sci-fi author Bruce Sterling, who is affiliated with the Clarke Center, gave the opening talk at the “Hello, Robot” exhibition, and Clarke Center director Sheldon Brown led the team (including Sterling) that created the video installation “My Elegant Robot Freedom” on display in the new exhibition.

The Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability (CCAS) and the Qualcomm Institute played host to nearly 200 freshmen and older students taking computer science, robotics or AP world history at La Jolla Country Day School. The students converged on UC San Diego to learn more about how technology can safeguard the future of the ancient past.

Sandra Horning, MD, Chief Medical Officer and executive vice president of global development for Roche and Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Duane Roth Memorial Award, which will be presented February 16 at the annual Industry/Academia Translational Oncology Symposium at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

UC San Diego distinguished professor of engineering Mohan Trivedi in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department has accepted the distinguished alumnus award from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Trivedi returned to the campus for the first time in nearly 43 years to accept the honor.

The International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB) has announced the winners of its top four awards for 2017, and leading the list is UC San Diego computer-science professor Pavel Pevzner. The Accomplishments by a Senior Scientist Award honors Pevzner's almost 30 years in the field of bioinformatics, and in particular his significant contributions to research and education.

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues at Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine and in London and Singapore, have conducted novel whole genome sequencing of a family in which two of four children were affected by Kawasaki disease. They have identified plausible gene variants that predispose some children to developing the disease.
