Down for a little Triton 5K friendly competition? For several years running, “Team Race Condition” from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering has consistently taken the top spot as the team with the largest number of registered members—including last year’s come-from-behind win, beating out teams from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the School of Global Policy and Strategy.

On April 9, more than 4,000 members of the UC San Diego community will gather on campus to support student scholarships at the 21st annual Triton 5K & Festival. Participation in this annual event contributes to the Campaign for UC San Diego. Since 1996, the 5K has raised more than $3.6 million in scholarships and benefited more than 1,000 motivated and talented students. This year’s charge is to help support the next 1,000.

The jewel—a jade pendant worn on a king’s chest during key religious ceremonies—was first unearthed in 2015. It is now housed at the Central Bank of Belize, along with other national treasures. Braswell recently published a paper in the Cambridge University journal Ancient Mesoamerica detailing the jewel’s significance. A second paper, in the Journal of Field Archaeology, describes the excavations.

University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers screened 10,000 colonies of bacteria found on the epidermis to determine how many had antimicrobial properties and at what rate these are found on healthy and non-healthy skin. In a paper published in Science Translation Medicine, the team reports isolating and growing good bacteria that produce antimicrobial peptides and successfully transplanting it to treat patients with the most common type of eczema, known as atopic dermatitis.
