Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and University of British Columbia (UBC) have determined that, in mice, age diminishes ability to regenerate axons, the brain’s communication wires in the spinal cord. The study is published March 31 in Cell Reports.

In patients with breast cancer, a short overnight fast of less than 13 hours was associated with a statistically significant, 36 percent higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and a non-significant, 21 percent higher probability of death from the disease compared to patients who fasted 13 or more hours per night, report University of California, San Diego School of Medicine researchers.

Swiss astronomer Michel Mayor, one of the world’s most renowned astrophysicists for planetary discovery, spoke at UC San Diego on March 23 as part of the 15th annual Kyoto Prize Symposium. The event, which was open to the public, inspired a wide range of attendees, from faculty to local high school students.

Sandeep Prabhu, a student at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine, lived in South India as a child where he witnessed firsthand the issues communities face when they have poor access to health care. His desire to help such communities inspired Prabhu to study medicine and spearhead an initiative that aims to save the lives of thousands of women who give birth outside institutional settings and often die en route to a clinic due to excessive blood loss.
