December 5, 2017 — Using a database of multiple myeloma patient samples and information, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that high ADAR1 levels correlate with reduced survival rates. They also determined that blocking the enzyme reduces multiple myeloma regeneration in experimental models derived from patient cancer cells.

December 5, 2017 — A new small-molecule drug can restore brain function and memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The molecule, called anle138b, works by stopping toxic ion flow in the brain that is known to trigger nerve cell death. Scientists envision that this drug could be used to treat Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and ALS.

December 4, 2017 — State Governor Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown, in partnership with the California Museum, recently announced inductees of the 11th Class of the California Hall of Fame. Among the new members is Mario Molina, the University of California San Diego’s Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemisty who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Scripps Institution of Oceanography Emeritus Professor Paul Crutzen, for research on the formation and decomposition of ozone. Molina and eight others will be inducted into the state’s hall of fame during an official ceremony in Sacramento at the California Museum, Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.

December 4, 2017 — The 2017-2018 season of the Qualcomm Institute’s IDEAS performance series gets underway Dec. 6 with a performance of St. Francis de los Barrios, a new opera by renowned SDSU composer Joseph Waters with a libretto by celebrated UC San Diego playwright Allan Havis.

December 3, 2017 — Two full-time University of California San Diego faculty members — Don Cleveland, who studies fundamental cellular mechanisms in the search for new treatments for diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and James McKernan, a mathematician who investigates algebraic geometry and multivariate polynomials — are recipients of the 2018 Breakthrough Prize, along with Joanne Chory, a plant biologist at Salk Institute for Biological Studies and adjunct professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego.

December 1, 2017 — The Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) unanimously approved yesterday two grants worth a total of almost $8 million to University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers investigating novel stem cell-based treatments for acute myeloid leukemia or AML.

November 30, 2017 — Glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer, typically fails to respond to treatment or rapidly becomes drug resistant. In a paper published online in the journal Cancer Cell on November 30, University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers identified a strategy that pinpoints a genetically distinct subpopulation of patients with glioblastoma that is particularly sensitive to drugs like cilengitide that target a cell adhesion receptor known as integrin αvβ3.

November 30, 2017 — Monal Parmar is a first-generation graduate currently enrolled in UC San Diego’s graduate engineering program. Parmar has a vision for decreasing STEM attrition using artificial intelligence. He created a device to make his vision a reality and his efforts were rewarded when he was invited recently to compete in the Entrepreneurs' Organization's (EO) Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) competition, Nov. 14.

November 30, 2017 — UC San Diego celebrated a landmark announcement on Monday—the campus’ move to NCAA Division I Athletics. Community leaders including Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders joined Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla in announcing that the Division I Big West Conference has invited UC San Diego to join its ranks.
