The University of California San Diego has been named the nation’s 10th best public university for LGBTQ students, according to BestColleges.com. The new rankings measure academic institutions that create environments and policies which meet the needs of students with a wide range of gender and sexual identities, along with additional academic and affordability metrics.

The discovery of nanoscale changes deep inside hybrid perovskites could shed light on developing low-cost, high-efficiency solar cells. Using X-ray beams and lasers, a team of researchers led by the University of California San Diego discovered how the movement of ions in hybrid perovskites causes certain regions within the material to become better solar cells than other parts.

UC San Diego professors Michael Burkart, Catherine Constable, Richard Gallo, William Gerwick, Miroslav Krstic and Lorraine Pillus have been awarded the distinction of fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest general science organization in the United States and publisher of the journal Science.

In the Department of Mathematics at the University of California San Diego, the “rule of three” applies in more ways than one. Just factor-in faculty members Peter Ebenfelt, Lei Ni and Ruth Williams, who all recently received national and international honors. Ebenfelt, associate dean of the Division of Physical Sciences, and Lei Ni, chair of the Department of Mathematics, were selected as members of the 2018 Class of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). They share this honor with their colleague Ruth Williams, whose many titles also include holder of the Charles Lee Powell Endowed Chair in Mathematics and member of the National Academy of Sciences. Now Williams adds winner of the 2017 Advancement of Women in Operations Research and the Management Sciences (WORMS) Award to her long list of distinctions.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found women over age 65 who engaged in regular light physical activity had a reduction in the risk of mortality.
