Nearly three decades ago, the late Donald Shiley and his wife Darlene donated the funds to create a comprehensive eye care facility at the University of California San Diego where top ophthalmologists would treat patients, conduct research and train the next generation of leaders in eye care and vision research. Now, the couple’s granddaughter, Patricia Shiley, is continuing the family legacy of philanthropy with a gift of more than $2 million to support the Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego.

After eight years of study, a team of researchers from the University of California San Diego and Johns Hopkins University published new findings about how to read the body’s histone code in the Nov. 7 issue of Science Advances. The findings answer a key question in the dynamic research area of epigenetics—adding chemical tags to DNA and histone proteins to alter cell functions without changing DNA sequence. Understanding the fundamental principles of how epigenetic information is transduced in the cell eventually could lead to developing new drugs for fighting diseases like cancer.

The Design Lab at the University of California San Diego, under the direction of founder Don Norman, has received a $250,000 gift from global communications company, Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT). The investment will support efforts at the Design Lab’s Center for Design-Driven Transformation (CDDT) to assist companies in using leading-edge design tools and perspectives to stay competitive in an ever-changing business landscape. Viasat was founded by Mark Dankberg and two UC San Diego alumni, Steve Hart and Mark Miller.

An alliance of researchers including scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego will accelerate the quest to find life on other planets. The team received a $7 million NASA Astrobiology grant to aid the long-range goal of extracting secrets from present and past oceans on Mars, Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, and Saturn’s moon Enceladus.

Kun Zhang, professor of bioengineering at the University of California San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, has received $14 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health to build 3D, digital single-cell maps of the human brain and organs in the respiratory and urinary systems. The work aims to provide a deeper understanding of the functions and malfunctions of organs in the human body at the level of individual cells.

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Kaiser Permanente have discovered that mothers who breastfed a child or children for six months or more are at lower risk for developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) years later during mid-life. With no other current prevention options aside from a healthy lifestyle, they say the finding may represent an early modifiable risk factor for a serious and chronic disease.
