An online survey of 900 consumers of three of the United States’ most popular cigarette brands suggests that adopting standardized cigarette packing may reduce consumers’ misconceptions that some cigarettes are less harmful than others, reports a team of researchers led by University of California San Diego School of Medicine and published in BMJ Tobacco Control.

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego have made a discovery with potential human health impact based on a study of parchment tubeworm, the marine invertebrate Chaetopterus sp., that resides in muddy coastal seafloors.
A new study published Dec. 12 in Biochemical Journal finds that the tubeworm, also known for its bioluminescence, has a ferritin with the fastest catalytic performance ever described, nearly eight times faster than that of human capabilities.

On behalf of collaborators at institutions world-wide, UC San Diego recently signed a contract for the design and construction of a state-of-the-art millimeter wave telescope for the Simons Observatory. The telescope is the first of several which will be located in the high Atacama Desert of Northern Chile in 2020. At an elevation of 5,200 meters—or 17,000 feet—above sea level, it’s an ideal location to survey the universe. As part of the Simons Observatory team of researchers from 35 member institutions, UC San Diego Department of Physics’ Professor Brian Keating and Assistant Professor Kam Arnold will have access to this instrument to study Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).
