An international team of scientists led by UC San Diego computer science and engineering professor Pengtao Xie has developed a new algorithm that shows promise in improving the detection of pneumonia from chest x-rays.
Technology & Engineering
Using models, researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues elsewhere, describe using RNA-targeting CRISPR/Cas13d technology to develop a new therapeutic strategy that specifically eliminates toxic RNA that causes Huntington’s Disease.
UC San Diego’s ranks now include 18 fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Three professors have been named 2022 NAI fellows, the highest professional distinction awarded to academic inventors.
A team including scientists at the University of California San Diego has been chosen to lead a $10M project to promote battery recycling and reuse. It’s part of a $74M award from the United States Department of Energy program on Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Conference on Mathematical Theory of Deep Neural Networks (DNN) at Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute
On Nov 17-18, 2022, HDSI held its first in-person DeepMath conference on campus since the pandemic, which included several HDSI faculty, postdocs and graduate students. This was the fifth iteration of the conference, which had been hosted virtually during the previous two years.
Engineering researchers have developed a battery-free, pill-shaped ingestible biosensing system designed to provide continuous monitoring in the intestinal environment. It gives scientists the ability to monitor gut metabolites in real time, which wasn’t possible before.
