Biologists at UC San Diego have found that a method they developed to identify and characterize new antibiotics can be employed to screen natural products quickly for compounds capable of controlling antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Parkinson’s disease is difficult to diagnose, particularly in its early stages. Now, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine – aided by a $375,000 grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) – hope to improve the prospects of early diagnosis by identifying a biological signpost in the blood.

Charles “Chip” Cox, a professor emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, passed away on Nov. 30, 2015. Cox conducted research on oceanic electromagnetic fields and the exploration of small-scale ocean structures, including measuring fine-scale fluctuations in temperature and salinity within ocean waters to understand the intensity of ocean turbulence.
