In a Pfizer-sponsored clinical trial to assess the effect of varenicline (Chantix®) on smoking cessation, as well as mood and anxiety levels in smokers with current or a history of depression, researchers concluded that the drug does help some of these patients to quit smoking without worsening symptoms of depression or anxiety.

Two researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have been awarded grants totaling more than $889,000 from the Cystinosis Research Foundation (CRF) to investigate better treatments and a cure for cystinosis. A rare and deadly genetic disease, cystinosis affects about 500 children and young adults in the United States and 2,000 worldwide. The most recent grants bring the total funding from CRF to UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers to more than $5.5 million since 2003.
Vedolizumab, a new intravenous antibody medication, has shown positive results for treating both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to researchers at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine. The findings, published in two papers, will appear in the August 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
