While some videos on physics have gained a cult-like following and hundreds of thousands of views, the subject that makes most people’s eyes glaze over still can’t compete with entertainers like Katy Perry in the YouTube world.
After a well-attended and sun-lit reception al fresco, UC San Diego’s Academic Senate presented the 2014 Distinguished Teaching Awards to 12 campus scholars in a formal ceremony. Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla and Academic Assembly Chair Kit Pogliano were featured speakers for the event, held May 27 in the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club.
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) has selected Kelley Thompson to receive a 2014 PCFSN Community Leadership Award. The award is given to individuals and organizations who significantly improve the lives of others through sports, fitness or nutrition-related programs within local neighborhoods.
Thirteen UC San Diego students will take off for research projects around the world this fall with funding from the Boren Awards for International Study and Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The merit-based federal programs each support study and research abroad to foster global understanding and partnerships among U.S. citizens.
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla presented Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Mario Molina with the UCSD Medal, the highest honor the university bestows and one that has only been presented 10 times, mostly to visiting heads of state.
Local philanthropist and campus supporter Ernest Rady has pledged a $1 million matching gift to fund fellowships that will help attract outstanding MBA students to the school. Rady has pledged to donate one dollar for every sixty cents raised by the school for fellowships, up to $1 million. Fellowships provide merit-based funding for talented students interested in attending the Rady School.
