UC San Diego Health leaders, physicians, nurses and staff joined together in May to celebrate the organization’s second annual Improvement Excellence Awards. The ceremony honors individuals and teams for improvement projects that made a positive difference in the lives of patients, team members and the community.

“I am continually inspired by the efforts our teams make every day to drive improvements while also providing world-class health care to the patients we are so privileged to serve,” said Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. “I am so proud to work with these incredible teams of dedicated staff, nurses, physicians and volunteers who treat each patient as family.”

Recognized projects were implemented from January 1 to December 31, 2023 and showed sustained improvement that aligned with at least one of the strategic goals for UC San Diego Health.

The strategic goal categories of excellence include: Pursuit of Quality, Patient Experience, Improving Access, Advancing Health Equity, Fostering a Culture of Belonging and Efficiency of Operations.

In total, 14 projects were recognized in over eight categories, including Grand Prize and Crowd Vote winners.

Congratulations to the 2024 Improvement Excellence Award Improvement of the Year winners!

Judging for the submissions was conducted by a panel of 10 senior leaders who represent a range of divisions and hospital units at UC San Diego Health. Criteria considered when reviewing submissions included: benefit to the organization and patients, sustainment, scalability (either internal or external) and creativity.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate and recognize all of the work being done by our team members,” said Ashley Gambhir, executive director of transformation at UC San Diego Health. “Efforts such as these projects demonstrate how we welcome opportunities for growth to ensure that UC San Diego Health continues to be a destination to receive and provide extraordinary patient care.”
