Google Selects UC San Diego Computer Science Professor and Alumni for Faculty Research Awards

Google has announced two new Google Faculty Research Awards to CSE alumni and one to CSE Prof. Ravi Ramamoorthi in the Jacobs School of Engineering of the University of California, San Diego. It is Ramamoorthi's second such award, after receiving one in 2014 while he was still at UC Berkeley (just months before he joined the CSE faculty at UC San Diego). In 2015 CSE Prof. Steven Swanson was the sole recipient at UC San Diego of the Faculty Research Award.

Scripps Professor Receives Research Achievement Award

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Distinguished Professor William Gerwick received the American Society of Pharmacognosy’s Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to natural products research. Gerwick will accept the award during the Society’s annual meeting in July at the 2016 Joint Natural Products Conference in Copenhagen.

UC San Diego is No. 14 on the Peace Corps Top Colleges List

The University of California, San Diego has been ranked 14th nationally among large schools on the 2016 Peace Corps list of colleges and universities that produce the most Peace Corps Volunteers, moving up one spot from last year. This marks the sixth consecutive year that UC San Diego has been named in the organization’s top 15 rankings and the 10th straight year that the campus has appeared in the top 25.

UC San Diego Researchers Cited Among “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds”

Twenty-two University of California, San Diego scientists and physicians are among the 2015 listing of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds,” an annual compendium of “Highly Cited Researchers” by Thomson Reuters, a multinational mass media and information company.

UC San Diego History Professor Presents Award-Winning Research about Mexican Immigration

UC San Diego Department of History Professor Natalia Molina, who also teaches urban studies and serves as associate vice chancellor for faculty diversity and equity, was recently awarded the 2015 Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship for her book, “How Race Is Made in America: Immigration, Citizenship, and the Historical Power of Racial Scripts.” Molina’s publication examines Mexican immigration from 1924 to 1965 to understand how broad themes of race and citizenship are established. She will discuss her research publicly as the next keynote speaker in the Division of Arts and Humanities’ Degrees of Health and Well-being lecture series, Wednesday. Jan. 27, 7:00 p.m., in UC San Diego’s Great Hall.

Scripps Lecture Captures Ocean Science Exploration between World Wars

Katharine Anderson, a historian of science in the Department of Humanities at York University in Toronto, will present a free public lecture, “Experimenting with the Expedition: Renewing the Ocean Sciences after World War I,” on Feb. 8, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science Society and the Environment on the Scripps Oceanography campus (8610 Kennel Way, La Jolla, CA 92037).
