Five physicists at the University of California San Diego have been named 2016 Fellows of the American Physical Society, a distinct honor of professional achievement from the nation’s largest society of physicists.
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) bestowed two of its most prestigious awards on two innovative Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, researchers.
Four biologists, a nanoengineer and a biophysicist at UC San Diego today received a total of more than $5 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health to pursue innovative and transformative research projects.
Raffaele Ferrari, a Scripps/UC San Diego alumnus and a professor of oceanography at MIT will present the Cody Award public lecture at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2016, in the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment (Scripps Seaside Forum), 8610 Kennel Way in La Jolla, Calif. Admission is free (seating is available on a limited basis) for the lecture, “The Role of Ocean Turbulence in Climate.”
UC San Diego has received a Diamond Award from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) in recognition of the campus’ commitment to alternative forms of transportation. Fifty-seven percent of UC San Diego commuters use transportation other than single-occupant vehicles, reducing annual transportation-related CO2 emissions by approximately 55,000 metric tons.
Three University of California San Diego professors in the Division of Biological Sciences have been named Faculty Scholars by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Honorees include Professor Samara Reck-Peterson and Professor Gürol Süel as well as Associate Adjunct Professor Clodagh O'Shea.
